Circular economy is more than waste separation and recycling. Behind the term circular economy are new production and consumption models that ensure sustainable, climate-friendly growth. At the heart of the Circular Economy is the conscious use of resources. With this form of economy, the use of resources can be designed efficiently for end consumers and companies. It reduces the consumption of raw materials and the generation of waste. Life cycles of products are extended and leftovers are being recycled instead of ending up in the trash. This way, a more efficient, sustainable production model – contrary to the current linear economy – is built, balancing progress and sustainability, as well as saving costs and resources.
In addition to the environment, the local economy in particular can also benefit from a circular economy. The reason: Circular economy promotes production models based on the reuse of waste from the surrounding area. The (re)use of local resources can lead to less dependence on imported raw materials. With the trend of moving production back to the local area and an increasing demand for regional products, a circular economy is in line with the spirit of the times.
Global population growth is showing the limits of linear production systems. More than 80% of the world’s population live in a country with an ecological deficit. A shift toward resource-conserving, regional production methods, which can be combined with other technological developments thanks to new digital platform models, is inevitable.
